THE ARTIST
Jang Jaerok is a contemporary artist who explores the ways in which visual experience is shaped today by bringing the materiality of traditional Korean ink painting into dialogue with the structures of digital imagery. Working with ink, hanji, repetitive brushwork, and the traditional process of mounting, he translates immaterial visual systems—such as pixels, grids, game imagery, and cosmological data—into the surface of painting. In his earlier works, he rendered symbols of contemporary capitalist desire and everyday life, including luxury cars, jewelry, and chandeliers, through meticulous ink painting, testing the contemporary possibilities of a traditional medium. His practice has since expanded toward the intersections where natural landscapes and digital environments, reality and virtuality, sensation and systems permeate one another. His recent works layer images of geological strata, the cosmos, pixels, black screens, and binary structures within a single pictorial plane, suggesting that painting is no longer a simple act of representation, but a field through which the world is perceived and reconfigured. Jang studied Oriental Painting at Dankook University, received his MFA in Oriental Painting from Hongik University, and completed doctoral coursework in Fine Arts at Hongik University. He has exhibited at institutions including the Seoul Museum of Art, Kansong Art Museum, Gyeonggi Museum of Modern Art, Gyeongnam Art Museum, and Pohang Museum of Steel Art. He has also participated in major exhibitions such as the 2016 Busan Biennale, the 2025 Jeonnam International Sumuk Biennale, and the 2026 Korea–China Exchange Exhibition at the Guangdong Museum of Art, continuing to present his work both in Korea and internationally.
THE ARTIST'S STATEMENT
For a long time, I have worked with the traditional materials of ink and hanji to paint contemporary images. In my earlier works, I depicted objects that symbolize the desires of modern capitalism—such as cars, jewelry, and chandeliers—through ink painting, asking how traditional painting might still hold and reflect the world of today. What mattered to me was not simply preserving the forms of the past, but exploring how these old materials and sensibilities could be reactivated within our present visual environment.
Over time, my attention shifted toward the very way we perceive the world. Today, the landscapes we encounter no longer belong solely to nature or physical reality. Images on screens, digital interfaces, game environments, satellite imagery, and the endless visual data collected online continually blur the boundary between the real and the virtual, producing a new sensory condition. During the pandemic, when it became difficult to gather landscapes firsthand, I began turning to web searches and open-world game imagery as a new source of landscape. At one point, I mistook a scene from a game for an actual landscape; that experience made me realize how layered and unstable the landscapes we see and believe in have already become.
This shift in perception also changed the way I work. I transfer collected images onto hanji through a grid, then construct the surface by filling or leaving empty each square with ink according to a set of rules. This process translates the pixel structure and binary logic of digital images into the repetitive labor of the hand. Even within a system that appears mechanical, ink spreads and seeps, and each brushstroke leaves subtle tremors, tonal variations, and traces of material presence. It is precisely at this intersection—between system and sensation, control and accident, digital structure and material painting—that I reconsider what painting can be today.
In my recent works, I bring together images from different dimensions—geological strata, the cosmos, black screens, pixels, and traces of data—within a single pictorial plane. Geological layers suggest accumulated time and the depth of matter; the cosmos points to the unknown, to what remains beyond human comprehension; pixels and digital structures reveal the visual conditions through which the world is now perceived and reconstructed. These are not separate themes, but elements that compose a scene in which past and present, material and immaterial, reality and virtuality coexist and collide on the same surface.
For me, painting is not a flat plane for representation, but a field in which different times, sensations, systems, and uncertainties overlap. Through the old materials of ink and hanji, I try to approach some of the most contemporary questions. The black surfaces, pixelated landscapes, geological layers, and cosmic images I paint are not meant to describe a single object, but to ask again how we see, believe in, and sense the world today.

작가소개
장재록은 한국 전통 수묵의 물성과 동시대 디지털 이미지의 구조를 교차시키며, 오늘의 시각 경험이 형성되는 방식을 탐구해온 작가이다. 그는 먹과 한지, 반복적인 붓질과 배접의 전통적 과정을 바탕으로, 픽셀·그리드·게임 이미지·우주 데이터와 같은 비물질적 시각 체계를 회화의 표면으로 번역한다. 초기 작업에서는 자동차, 보석, 샹들리에 등 현대 자본주의의 욕망과 일상을 수묵으로 정교하게 재현하며 전통 회화의 동시대적 가능성을 실험했고, 이후에는 자연 풍경과 디지털 환경, 실재와 가상, 감각과 시스템이 서로 침투하는 지점에 주목해 작업을 확장해왔다. 최근의 작업은 지층, 우주, 픽셀, 검은 화면, 이진 구조 등 서로 다른 시간과 차원의 이미지를 하나의 평면 안에 중첩시키며, 회화가 더 이상 단순한 재현이 아니라 세계를 인식하는 하나의 장이라는 점을 드러낸다. 장재록은 단국대학교에서 동양화를 전공하고 홍익대학교 대학원에서 동양화 석사 학위를 받았으며, 동 대학원 미술학 박사과정을 수료했다. 서울시립미술관, 간송미술관, 경기도미술관, 경남도립미술관, 포항시립미술관 등에서 전시했으며, 2016년 부산비엔날레 본전시, 2025년 전남국제수묵비엔날레, 2026년 광동미술관 한중교류전 등에 참여하며 국내외에서 지속적으로 작업을 발표하고 있다.
작가노트
나는 오랫동안 먹과 한지라는 전통적인 재료를 통해 동시대의 이미지를 그려왔다. 초기에는 자동차, 보석, 샹들리에처럼 현대 자본주의의 욕망을 상징하는 대상들을 수묵으로 옮기며, 전통 회화가 오늘의 세계를 어떻게 담아낼 수 있는지 질문했다. 나에게 중요한 것은 단순히 과거의 형식을 유지하는 일이 아니라, 오래된 재료와 감각이 지금의 시각 환경 속에서 어떻게 다시 살아날 수 있는가 하는 문제였다.
이후 나의 관심은 점차 우리가 세계를 바라보는 방식 그 자체로 옮겨갔다. 오늘날 우리가 보는 풍경은 더 이상 자연이나 현실에만 머물지 않는다. 화면 속 이미지, 디지털 인터페이스, 게임의 배경, 위성 사진, 웹에서 수집되는 수많은 시각 정보들은 현실과 가상의 경계를 끊임없이 흔들며 새로운 감각의 환경을 만든다. 특히 팬데믹 시기를 지나며 직접 풍경을 수집하는 일이 어려워졌을 때, 나는 웹서치와 오픈월드 게임의 이미지를 새로운 풍경의 자료로 받아들이게 되었다. 게임의 장면을 실제 풍경으로 오인했던 경험은, 내가 믿고 바라보는 풍경이 이미 얼마나 복합적인 층위 위에 놓여 있는지를 자각하게 했다.
이러한 인식은 작업의 방식에도 변화를 가져왔다. 나는 수집한 이미지를 한지 위에 그리드로 옮기고, 각 칸을 먹으로 채우거나 비우는 규칙을 통해 화면을 구성한다. 이 과정은 디지털 이미지의 픽셀 구조와 이진법적 질서를 손의 반복적인 행위로 다시 번역하는 일이다. 기계적 체계처럼 보이는 질서 안에서도 먹은 번지고 스며들며, 붓질은 미세한 흔들림과 농담의 차이를 남긴다. 나는 바로 그 지점, 즉 시스템과 감각, 통제와 우연, 디지털 구조와 물질적 회화가 교차하는 자리에서 오늘의 회화를 다시 생각한다.
최근의 작업에서 나는 지층, 우주, 검은 화면, 픽셀, 데이터의 흔적 같은 서로 다른 차원의 이미지들을 하나의 평면 안에 함께 놓는다. 지층은 축적된 시간과 물질의 깊이를, 우주는 인간 인식이 끝내 다 도달할 수 없는 미지의 영역을, 픽셀과 디지털 구조는 오늘날 세계를 인식하고 재구성하는 시각적 조건을 드러낸다. 이 요소들은 서로 분리된 주제가 아니라, 과거와 현재, 물질과 비물질, 실재와 가상이 한 화면 안에서 동시에 공존하고 충돌하는 장면을 구성한다.
나에게 회화는 대상을 재현하는 평면이 아니라, 서로 다른 시간과 감각, 질서와 불확실성이 겹쳐지는 인식의 장이다. 먹과 한지라는 오래된 재료를 통해 나는 오히려 가장 현재적인 질문들에 다가가고자 한다. 내가 그리는 검은 화면과 픽셀화된 풍경, 지층과 우주의 이미지는 어떤 대상을 설명하기 위한 것이 아니라, 오늘 우리가 세계를 보고 믿고 감각하는 방식 자체를 다시 묻기 위한 회화적 장면들이다.
