THE ARTIST
The artist Jang Jaerok was born in Seoul in 1978. His mother is a calligrapher and she must have inspired Jang’s artistic sense since childhood. He did a BA in Asian painting at Dan-kook University and an MA at Hong-ik University, and he is now a PhD candidate in art at Hong-ik University. In his early career, he examined everyday life in capitalist society through modern images in traditional Korean ink painting. His subject is modern sensitivity and his material is objects of desire. Closely looking at his black and white photos, we get to know they are actually ink paintings expressed by light and shade of ink. His ink paintings of luxury cars, jewels and chandeliers are familiar not only to art lovers but also to sports manias. He had exhibitions at venues in Korea including Seoul Museum of Art, Gansong Museum, Gyeonggi Museum of Modern Art, Gyeongnam Art Museum and Pohang Museum of Steel Art. Lately, he participated in the main exhibit at Busan Biennale 2016 where he extended his work by adding installation to his traditional Korean ink painting methods to show modern images. His activity is not limited in Korea, but he also actively takes part in international exchange shows. He designed international exhibits in cooperation with German organizations.
Jang was fascinated by huge artificial structures and sophisticated machines. Consequently, his Korean paintings somewhat look like architectural drawings on graph paper measured with a ruler. In his paintings, we cannot find traditional features of Asian painting like drawing with one stroke of a brush or cheerful vitality. We live in a world full of machinery and artificial structures. He does not only show surface of neatly cut machines or structures; they feel like bizarre, scary anatomical charts of human body.

THE ARTIST'S STATEMENT
Painting is a general display of senses that are made when human consciousness interacts with the exterior world. However, the literary critic Herman Northrop Frye said, “A poem is only imitation of another poem”. If his theory is applied to painting, some might agree in some aspects. Painting is imitation of another image, not that of another painting. Nowadays, imitating photos is a main trend. Photos are products of camera mechanism. In other words, photos are results of arrangement of numberless 0s and 1s in binary system. Thus, what we see is only arranged numbers, and modern painting is imitation of the arranged numbers.
Painting is the first human consciousness. Human beings were consistently stuck to Nature (in-sist). They could be finally detached from Nature when they started painting (ek-sist). We call this existence. Since the era of existence, human beings have been under control of images. Letters and number are invented to criticize the spell of images. Paradoxically, number gave birth to images again. Number is a tool for critical thinking but it casts a spell on us again. This is “digital phenomenon”.
Again, letters and number are invented to escape the spell and Nature. Letters and number helped understand Nature in a form of equation. Equations have made massive bridges and, moreover, machine civilization. Moving from massive material civilization to information civilization, humans do not become enlightened but they are caught in the whirlpool of images. Furthermore, the whirlpool of the uncertain future mythicizes human economy, politics and culture. Again, spell, demythicization, re-spell, rationalization, enlightenment, re-chaos and unpredictability take turns, and the pattern makes human history.
Asian painting is my method. Asian painting is not an imitation of Nature nor expression of mind, different from western paintings. It is a training of my emotion and belief throughout my life. Asian painting is mind training and realization of moral life as well as techniques. It is morally and spiritually elevated life itself. I hold the spirit of Asian painting. At the same time, I explore the world with pixels of images. I use traditional Asian painting for a form, and for content I examine the reality of absurd human civilization that has been mythicized in the name of rationality. The form is photographic images fabricated by 0 and 1 of binary system. I question about the issues in 21st century, in the firm belief in the dialectical pattern of the immense human history. That is my mission as an artist.
